Toilet Fantasy
Another day as a teacher always proved to be different every single day. Here's an example.
A typical day.
Cheecher: Good morning class
Class: Good mouuuurningg sir....
Class resumes with the Cheecher having to go through grammer with them. Two students in front looked a little lethargic and one of them requested for a toilet break. Granted. 5 mins later, the partner asked for the same request. Granted.
10 mins have passed and there are no signs of the first student. Suddenly, a student from the back row moved himself slowly to the back door, clutching his stomach.
Cheecher: Where do you think you are going young man?
Student: Toilet cher. Cannot take it already. -still clutching his stomach and edging himself nearer to the back door.
Cheecher: No. You sit down and wait for your fellow friends.
Student: Cannot take it cher. Really. -slowly edging himself to the door, almost making it and suddenly dashed out of the door.
If it was that urgent, I'd guess, I could make an exception. 15 mins have passed and still no signs from the first and second student.
Hmmmm......
Cheecher: Class, you remain seated while I search for your friends.
Off I went to the toilet, just one class away from mine. With so many different scenarios in my head, I tried to anticipate anything out of the ordinary.
As entered the men's room, I could not believe my eyes. For the first time, I saw 2 guys,
SLEEPING ON THE TOILET FLOOR!!
The student who was clutching his stomach, was squatting down and talking to these two clowns.
I shouted at the boys and told the one who said he had stomachache to go to the toilet now and shit.
For the other 2, I slow talked with them and rationalized their actions and how we should give each other mutual respect instead of acting like small kids and me having to reprimand them. That worked, and now, no more toilet break requests from them.
The guy who went to shit, I gave him only 3 mins to do his business. He came back rushing.

Cher? You wear SK-II ah?
Wth? The questions raised by my students are sometimes just irrelevant or just plain cute? This is just a preview of what goes on in my ghetto school.
While teaching English and telling my students to complete their comprehension, Edwin, the class clown, raised his hands and asked me, "Cher, you got wear SK-II or not?" -in his Ah Beng English-
Cheecher: "Huh? SK-II? Me? Wear? Whatever for?" -in proper English mind you ;D-
Edwin: "No lah, your skin ah, very smooth like that"
Cheecher: "I don't take lotions. I just drink a lot of water. That's all"
Edwin: "Orh..." -begins to fold his comprehension paper and turn it into a paper machine gun. (i am serious. he did this)
20 mins down the lesson. I glanced outside my 3rd storey class corridor and saw an unknown student kicking his shoes about. On his third attempt, as he kicked his shoes in mid air, he saw his nice shoes fall from the 3rd storey to the 1st floor.
Cheecher to class: "You guys know what is the dumbest thing I've seen in my life?"
Class looks at me.
Cheecher: "That boy who had just thrown his shoe down to the ground floor for no apparent reason. Are all your students like that?" -shakes head-
A day in BoonLay can never be the same. It makes you wonder what is going to happen next....

Peace

Memories. Just sheer memories. Moments of peace captured in still time. I was free. I crave for it again. This was not photoshopped nor was it taken from some website. I took it myself.
Borobudur, the ancient ruin of Central Java. The early morning breeze settles in your soul as you try to grapple with the fact that it is true. Life out of Singapore truly calms the mind. I looked around and found no tall buildings in sight. Peace. Everything around me was natural. The lushious greenery and the carvings on of the mountain on the skyline. Visual therapy I call it. I am truly in need of one right now. Anything. Anything that pleases my eyes for a short moment will do also. Hopefully, the Jakarta gig will happen and I could return back the to the city of opportunity. That's what they locals there call it. Oh well, I really want it to happen.
Been feeling a little uptight lately but I never fail to suppress these negative emotions. As what a friend of mine said, nowadays, people have really high IQ but amazingly low EQ. They do not know what is basic coutesy and how to interact appropriately with different people in different situations. I witnessed one today but hey, unless someone tell the person off, he would not know that he is actually one bloody disrespectful individual. Sometimes, you can't splash water on someone's face to wake him up. You just got to throw in the kitchen sink as well.
I have to sleep now. Meeting my students tomorrow morning. Missing them already. I know they didn't miss me. They just want to avoid my composition as long as they can. Lol.

Horror Movie

What is scarier than a horror movie? Meeting your students. Let me explain.
Having the luxury of time on a lazy Saturday afternoon, I had a few options on how I wanted to spend it. Baybeats? Movies? A mug of hot teh with Shaiful? I'd figure, spending some moolahh on me would be alright once in a while. Scanned through a few movies at sg.movies.yahoo.com and figured that Boo! sounds interesting enough. A horror movie! Yay!!!
So, I waited for Syarifah at Lido before heading down to Far East to get some food before the movie started. As we passed by the outdoor McDonald's cafe, I was transfixed to a face that was so familiar. He said,
"Wah! Not bad!" Haha. I was in total shock. My students have never seen me so handsome outside of school. Lol. Who can blame them, it is obligatory for me to wear shirts and pants when teaching. To them, I am the mean, fierce, "Mr Policeman", teacher who teaches them English in school. Haha. I just cannot wait for their reactions and their questions in school on Tuesday. What a horror to meet your students. Urghh... Still a little taken aback by the whole experience because I didn't expect to see him there and didn't had the time to react appropriately. I just walked off.
Oh well, watch Boo! Not bad. They do have their shocking moments and to be honest, I squirmed and screamed. Hey! It's a freaking scary movie for goodness sake. Don't act all macho on me ok? In my next entry, I will talk about golf. Yup, you heard me, golf.

Of skirts and Museum
I'm so worn out. Lethargic. Teaching, jamming, gigs, hair nightmares. Urgh!!! Anyways, the kids in my class are giving me a hard time with marking because their works are literally full of mistakes. Why don't they just make me write their composition for them. I know they would like it. Those lil imps. grrrrr.... But I think for the past 3 days, they would be happy not to see me and the word Poison on the whiteboard.
I'm helping out in SMU's Matriculation by taking photos and directing the lost sheeps to the proper rooms. I make it a point to take the best photos for the freshmans' matriculation card because I'm already stuck with one lousy photo. Hate the dude who took it. Damn lousylahhhhHHhhH!HH!!
Have I said that I am really tired? I feel like sleeping in school right now. Just sleep on the benches and wake up once I feel like it. Don't care about the world already. I feel numb and it's coming at the wrong time. Baybeats is happening tonight and many are asking me out to watch. I DON'T WANTLAHHHHH. TIRED........... sorry........ On top of that, AJC is having a production tonight and I really want to take a look but, I AM TIREDLAHHHHHH...... sorry....

God won't ask what neighbourhood you were in
He might ask how you treated your neighbours
God won't ask the colour of your skin
He might ask the content of your character

Rough
Reading the newspaper today made me realise that, there are many SAD and Depressing people out there! =shakes head= tsk tsk. How now? Well, today, even though I had a rough day, I'm going to write it in a non-sad, non-depressing tone. Let's give it a try shall we?
Woke up this morning with relief, knowing that I do not have to go through the hassle of taking the public transport and be a sardines with the rest of the school of morning fishies! yay!!!! (shouts in joyous tone). Slept a lil while longer but was shortlived when I was greeted by my vibrating phone (grinz). My SMS to my mechanic yesterday was finally replied and he told me to get Chinook and bring her to his workshop to get her fixed. Yay!!! But wait a minute, how do I get Chinook from school all the way to Sixth Avenue.... hmm (happily thinks away). Ah!
I called Rashid up to ask for his favour. And so off we went to my relief school to get Chinook. The problem now lies with the fact that, we had to push the bike from behind. Obviously, the man with the experience (refer to the Lu Crazy ah, Ah Pek! entry) had to do the pushing from the back. And so we did, with Rashid steering Chinook in front while I, rode his vespa with my right foot pushing my metal rack from behind. From Boon Lay, ALLLLL THE WAY, to Sixth Ave. We crossed major roads, rode down highways, horned by friendly lorry and car drivers who were very patient with us. To them, thank you very much for your kind understanding.
Reaching Sixth Avenue was such a relief I tell you. Never have I felt so happy in my whole life, knowing that I can now stop elevating my right foot and stop worrying whether a 3 ton lorry was going to hit us or not. Thank god nothing happened to us.
The whole episode today left poor old me parched and famished. We decided to head down to Holland V to grab some grubs. I ordered my happiest food. Spring Chicken!!!! The lil fried birdie was so crispy and juicy.... yum... Ahhh, the goodness of life. You just got to enjoy it you know. You might never know when your last spring chicken will be.
Meeting Nawaz by chance was a bonus. A short Punk reunion was what we needed. Our loud, distinct laughters could be heard miles away. Talking about bribing our classmates with offerings. Lol. Anything goes man. Anything goes.
My eyes were beginning to get red from the tired escapade. I badly needed to get home and get some shut eye. Rashid gave me a lift to Buona Vista MRT and off lil ol' Jamiel went home happily. On the train, a Johor worker asked me whether the train was heading towards Kranji. I said yes. Yay!!! I did a good deed today. I helped. (it was a good deed what! bleah....)
Reached home and sank onto my bed, typing the events for today. Yup! Happy!!! Guys, let's right happy events. Even if we're going through a rough patch, just put a smiley face sticker on top of it ok? As what they always say, "Don't worry... Be happy"

EmssiM
Anybody missed me? Sorry for the long hiatus. I've been too busy with my work, music and neverending personal life. Where do I start? Let's see.....
Relief teaching:
Teaching these ghetto kids are truly challenging. They are actually a smart bunch but their laziness and poor guidance offsets their ability to strive in their academic fields. Adopting my unique style of teaching has allowed me to see some progress and surprised many teachers and staff from the school. Apparently, I was told that, the number of English teachers who have taught and left in these 2 classes, 3/6 and 3/7, is the highest in the school. The HOD Miss Yap and VP, Mrs Mano, came to see me personally and asked me how come the class has been nice to me. Lol. Beats me. I'm firm and fierce in class but yet, I know how to draw the line between the respect that I need to give to them as students. When any of the students try to be funny with me, I'll make sure, he'll either be the laughing stock of the class or the student who will be asked the most number of questions. I'll do that until he shuts up and don't dare to open his voice unnecessarily anymore. Thus far, the number has drasticly decreased after I've managed to pin down all the troublemakers on the first day of class.
I've been called Michelle Platini in school. WTH! All because of my hair. Crapz. Rumours also spreads fast. Lol. Words have been going round that me and Nad are a couple. PUHLEASEEELAHHHH, pair me up with someone better can? LOL! Nad hates it when I always repeat the story to her. Currently, I'm learning sign language with Cikgu Ismail's wife who is the resource teacher over there. There are many hearing impaired students who studies in the school, so these resources teachers facilitate their learning by translating what was said by their teachers. So for now, I've been practicing with the hearing impaired students themselves during the free period. A great bunch of students who are so expressive in thier conversations. I can't wait to sign with them on Monday.
Hmm... Next. Music:
I've been performing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 2 weeks in a row for Orchard Jam; an event organised to raise funds for the Children's Cancer Foundation. That was the most awesome event that I've ever did anywhere and anytime. Met great soundman and musicians alike. People like Daniel, Lee's lil brother, Syltra, the youngest female busker at only 15 in age and 5th Avenue, an acoustic duo. I've had people sitting down along the pavements of Paragon and requesting their favourite songs at 10pm. How cool is that? I even went down to perform for the Arts Cafe at Esplanade Library, courtesy of Johnathan who runs the program there. Managed to chat up with Chris, founder of Music for Movement, Sherlyn from The Unexpected band and Richard who owns a graphic design company. Fun bunch, just talked about originals and the daily occurance of life.
Next, Royale:
We performed for Orchard Jam too and my god, the reception was truly encouraging. Played our 5 originals, on top of some covers for a good 1 set. The next day, we were invited to play at the Arts Cafe which was formerly the Old Parliament House. I swear, the architecture both in and out, made me really excited. I'm a sucker for colonial architecture. We might be performing there again, but not as a guest but as our OWN show. The organiser wants to organise a show just for us. I really don't know how or when but certainly for sure, we're not going to do it anytime soon. We need more materials before we can ever embark on such a high scale project.
What else... Life:
I had the chance to witness Stage It's play, The Sword Has 2 Edges. Great acting I must say to the performers. I truly enjoyed myself. Kudos to Stage It. Hmmm... Malik's cousin came down all the way from Indonesia, Solo. She managed to catch Royale's performance and I brought her to the Singapore Mandai Zoo with Malik. Both of them loved the trip. Slept over at Malik's house before sending her to the airport at 6am in the morning. Her grandmother already made me promise her to visit Solo. Not that I don't want to go but I'm just tied up with school and the funds are just not enough. That's all. I would really love to go back to Solo and stay there for a week or two. The culture I long to breathe. Missing it already.
Crying tongues that tears the voice
Happy skin that speaks volume
You walk to search
You ask to rest
The serenity is what I crave
Because I want to wake up
With a smile on my face
